Late Fall Fishing

The weather in recent days has been unseasonably warm in Delaware.  With temperatures still around 70 degrees, the ice cream trucks are still running their neighborhood routes.  All this makes for good fishing opportunities.

With Tautog action starting to wind down in the Delaware Bay, the focus moves toward Striped Bass fishing.  28 to 50 inch range fish are being reported.  The bigger rockfish are caught by trolling large colorful Lures

I've fished the local spillway for panfish a few times and caught one hungry largemouth bass down state, as well.  White and Yellow perch fishing has also been excellent and Shad are in the rivers too.  Anglers should expect fall Rainbow Trout fishing to continue to be productive on White Clay Creek.

Before I sign off, I'd like to share this video about fishing for survival food.  With the economy hurting, more and more families are fishing to supplement their monthly food supply.  While you have to be careful not to eat fish from badly polluted bodies of water, panfish tend to absorb less toxins. Be sure to trim away the fat deposits and skin before cooking your fish fillets and follow the fish consumption advisory published by the state of Delaware.  Without further ado, here is the link to the youtube video  Catching and Eating Fish For Survival.

Post Hurricane Fishing Report

Last week, Hurricane Joaquin whipped through the mid atlantic region in a hurry and then made its way back out to sea.  With that system gone,  the crisp air and cooler water temperatures made conditions perfect for a day out on the water.

I headed out with some friends to the Outer Wall on October 9th, armed with green
crabs, targeting Tautog. It took some effort to pull the blackfish out of the deep rock crevices, but we quickly boated four nice keeper fish.  The fishing slowed down as the morning progressed, but there is nothing like taking home some thick Tog fillets for the dinner table.  If you are looking for a good fillet knife to purchase, I highly recommend this fillet knife.  It is great for cutting out the bones, without missing too much meat.

Back on land, I also went panfishing with nightcrawlers at Noxontown Lake and the Appoquinimink River in Middletown, Delaware.  Big white perch were plentiful, as well as bluegill.  I am looking forward to the big Striper run that should follow next month and also some fall trout fishing in the Pennsylvania mountains.  Wouldn't head out into the water without my Orvis Waders.

Delaware Fishing Report - August 24th, 2015

Freshwater
Anglers at the Levels Road Park Pond and Noxontown Pond in Middletown are reporting jumbo bluegills on a variety of baits, including worms, crickets, and jigs.  Some Largemouth Bass and Pickerel in the 1-2 pound range were also reported.  Catfishing is great too, especially at night.

The cool Piedmont creeks of Delaware should be prime locations for smallmouth fishing, with a mix of rock bass, trout, suckers and sunfish always in the quarry.
There are also some deep spots in White Clay that hold trout all year long.  Last but not least, Muskies have been caught in the Brandywine River.  You'll want 40 lb. Tess line and a red/white spoon.

Bays
On a recent outing to the upper Delaware bay, bluefish and perch were biting hard, with some fishermen reporting slot Rockfish here and there.

The Sassafras River in nearby Maryland is a good place to connect with large quantities of White Perch and Channel Catfish.  Not surprised to hear of some small Rockfish in the mix.

The Rehoboth Bay was reportedly good for bluefish and spot last week, on shiny spinners and trout lures.

Saltwater
Fishermen report that the best fishing (as expected) has occurred in the morning and night.
With the summer nights cooling, give night surf fishing a try for Kingfish and Croaker.  The various inlet locations are reporting nice catches of Summer Flounder, Croaker, and Rockfish.  Some anglers out of Ocean City came back with Marlin and Mahi in tow.
