March 2019 First State Delaware Fishing Report

Delaware Fishing Report March 2019

Freshwater

They say that March comes in like a lion
and out like a lamb. Well that certainly
seems to be what has occurred this March.
With a winter storm icing the waters on
March 1st and 70 degree temperatures by
the end of the month, the fishing has been
variable.

Anglers are catching more bass each day and some
reporting great crappie action in the farm ponds of New
Castle and Kent Counties. Besides that, channel
catfish and bullheads are providing plenty of
action in the tidal rivers. A few weeks ago some
anglers braved the cold to test the trout fishing in the two
downstate ponds that were stocked recently.

Most of those anglers are now turning their sights to the
Delaware trout season opener in another week or so.  If you do go
fishing on opening day, bring plenty of power bait and plenty of
patience.

Fishing pressure will be high, but so will your chances of connecting
with a tasty rainbow trout. Just in time for the fishing season,
Delaware bass fishermen are encouraged to pick up a copy
of the best bass fishing guide in first state fishing history, Big Bass
in the Small Wonder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012BZ7OW8

Saltwater

Some anglers have gotten out onto the docks and beaches of the
Delaware bay and coast. I am not one of those anglers, although
I did try some of the canals around South Bethany earlier
in the winter.  I look forward to the surf fishing picking up with
bluefish, rock fish and kingfish action just less than a month away.

One of the first places I plan to fish will be the Indian River Inlet
and bay.  Pontoon season starts in May.  Really looking forward to
checking out some of the lesser fished areas of Sussex County too.
If you have a vacation coming up and are in need of  a telescopic fishing
rod for your suitcase or even some additional tackle be sure to check
