January 2025 Happy New Year

 January 2025

Happy New Year Delaware Sport Fishing Fans,

Things have been quite stagnant for fishing in Delaware with the polar vortex temperatures that have gripped much of the East Coast.

I have gotten out fishing four times since winter has fallen.   I hooked a carp at the spillway but it got off.  Other than that, I have caught zero fish.   I have used a variety of baits, lures, rods in local creeks and rivers hoping to connect with some yellow perch or a big catfish --nothing!

Right now it is 4F temperature outside.  I'm not fishing.  However, I have organized my fishing gear and thought it would be nice to drop a line to all my Delaware Sport Fishing Blog friends.  I hope to see you out there when the weather warms up.   I am very much looking forward to fishing one of the downstate ponds that they stock with trout in early March.

Summer 2024 Fishing Report for Delaware and Beyond

    Summer 2024

I was fortunate to spend alot of the summer fishing my favorite                waters from the East Coast in Delaware to the mountains of West            Virginia to the lakes and streams of Michigan and Illinois.

Some of my highlights of the summer include catching two invasive species.  One inhabiting to Lake Michigan, called a Round Goby, was not larger than a shiner.  It looked like something from a deep ocean trench and puzzled fellow fishermen when I posted a picture.

The other invasive species I landed -a first for me- was a Northern Snakehead.  An invasive prehistoric looking creature native to Asia and Africa has some serious teeth.  For some time,  I had known a certain stream in Delaware that I'd fished my whole life had a population of snakehead and this bugger grabbed the whole night crawler and provided excellent sport and tablefare.  It's white flaky meat delighted my family that evening for dinner.  You have to google this fish if you have never seen one before.  It's some interesting reading too.  Did you know they can live for some time out of water?

As we go into the last month of summer, I'm remembering other highlights like catching Sea Bass and fishing with my dad and sons on Indian River Bay in Delaware.   Also a nice time fishing a pristine West Virginia quarry for beautiful Small Mouth Bass.   As well, I caught several blue claw crab off my local dock and steamed them up with old bay and butter.  In homage to the hit song about Blue Claw Crabs, I suppose.

In what's becoming a family tradition, I also made a point to take my sons many a morning to our favorite local honey holes on the Appoquinimink River for Catfish and Croaker, as well as White Clay Creek for Rock Bass and Smallmouth.  We caught live leeches for bait as well as crayfish.

And now a word from our sponsors:

If you are looking to discover some new freshwater fishing                          locations in Delaware, you have to download the ultimate fishing               guidebook for the state of Delaware:  Big Bass in the Small Wonder

Delaware Sport Fishing Report:  Spring 2024

Fishing season has arrived!

Freshwater Report

First, I did go trout fishing.   Northern Delaware really has some beautiful streams that rival anything in Southeastern Pennsylvania --well maybe Philly at least!  But still, you can really find solitude wading or hiking alongside some of these Delaware designated trout streams.  I hiked up toward the headwaters of one and did some trout fishing along the way.  Really got on top of a little quarry of some nice sized Rainbows.  Got it to hit a live worm, but it got away into the under structure of the bank.  I didn't have much time but I have heard of other anglers doing well.  I hope to get back out trout fishing.

I also got a chance to fish a farm pond and the run below the spillway, catching a Bullhead Catfish and Largemouth Bass.   So everything freshwater is biting --time to get out there and enjoy it.  Fishing season is in full swing.

Saltwater

I fished near the mouth of the C&D canal where it enters the Delaware Bay and hooked up with two nice Yellow Perch and an American Eel.  Also fished a brackish tributary that shall remain un named and took my kids.  We had such a blast catching Channel Catfish, White Perch and American Eel.  I really hope they enjoy these memories as much as I do.  I definitely took some pictures as my 3 year old daughter caught her first fish.  Precious.

In addition to the Canal and Tidal Rivers, anglers are catching the usual mix in the Delaware Bay and I hope to head down to bigger saltwaters to target Tautog, Weakfish, Kingfish, Flounder and Rockfish.  Sharks?

Who knows what I'll catch using the Surf Fishing tag I got as a Christmas gift from my family.  I'll be sure to update you all when I go.

 January-February 2024 Delaware Fishing Report:

Happy New Year Delaware Sport Fishing Blog Readers:

Well, the fishing has been good in regions of the country where you can ice fish.   This is not the case in Delaware.  I have been out 2 or 3 times to the brackish rivers this winter with not very much luck at all.  Still, I am right with the other Delaware anglers who cannot wait for opening day of trout season.

Freshwater

Delaware will stock two ponds in March, followed by opening day on the trout streams in April.  Some tips for catching them include, using a small hook, light line, using Power Bait or Salmon Eggs, using a three way rig and going near the fish feeder contraptions (if allowed).

Delaware's ponds, brackish creeks and rivers should be giving up bass and catfish but this angler has had no luck, other than a Black Drum and couple perch.

Saltwater

A good friend of mine told me that fisherman are connecting with Tog Bluefish and Winter Flounder down the ocean and bay.  I would like to go down to the sea and try my luck but I will wait until the water warms up as I have never been one to partake in arctic plunges.  I have alot of interest in trying one of the headboats downstate this season to catch a limit of black sea bass, croaker or trout.

Delaware Sport Fishing Report

October/November 2023

Saltwater

Delaware saltwater anglers having luck fishing the Delaware Bay near Lewes for Tautog - or "Tog" as they are called locally.   Tog are certainly some of the most tasty fish in the sea.  I think they taste just like lump crab meat or even lobster.   They can be caught on sandfleas or green crabs.

Most people may not realize that the salt-line in the Delaware Bay goes all the way up to the C&D Canal if not further.   Fishing in the upper bay areas near Woodland or Augustine has been very good for fat White Perch, Black Drum, Catfish, Eel and short Stripers.  Bloodworms, clams and nightcrawlers are the baits of choice.   I have never caught a Sturgeon but was reminded the other day that they are out there too.  What a diverse and amazing estuary the Delaware Bay is.

Freshwater

Besides Perch,  fishermen are also having alot of luck in the creeks in our area for rainbow trout.  I always do well with a nice big nightcrawler on a splitshot sinker but some anglers I know prefer canned trout bait.  In addition to trout, I heard a fisherman saying he and some friends have caught BIG carp in the tributaries of Christiana River using corn and hotdogs.   I had a good day fishing a local state park pond for Yellow Perch and even caught a few white perch.  I heard that Becks Pond is putting up Bass and even the occasional SnakeHead.  I also hear Snake Head are good eating but have never had the pleasure of trying one.   Maybe in 2024??

Safety

Be careful to anyone fishing the jetties this time of year, whether we're talking Reedy Point or the Indian River Inlet.  It can get mighty slippery out there or rocks can roll over your ankle.   Not to mention the rogue waves from passing boats can seem to come out of nowhere.  Be sure to wear cleats and go out there when the tide is very low if you can.  Stay safe everyone!

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2023 Delaware Fishing Report

Delaware Sport Fishing Report for August/September 2023

Delaware has been unseasonably warm in August and I have only gotten out fish once.

In freshwater news, I had a good time catching bass and big bluegill using fat nightcrawlers. All the kids had fun and we enjoyed getting out for a hike too. I saw a lot of fly fisherman trying their luck for trout when I drove up into Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

In Saltwater news,  I  heard reports of fishermen catching sharks on the surf down on the seashore and an old fishing buddy told me now is the time to get out there for trophy fish - whether you're after Tog or Flounder .

Overall, although I did not accomplish my summer goal yet of catching a snake head,  I got the invite to fish down the Brandywine and I would not mind cooking one of those up on the grill with some BBQ Teriyaki sauce sometime.

More fishing to come as the weather cools I'm sure.  Truth is, fall can be the best time to try life Crayfish in the creeks or blood worms in the title areas. Tight lines everybody good luck fishing!

 June-July 2023 Delaware Fishing Report

My fishing adventures took me from the Mid Atlantic to the midwest this summer.  I caught some fish to write home about and some that would be more worthy as live bait.  All the while, enjoying the scenery immensely.  Here's the scoop!

Saltwater:

I was able to get out and fish the Delaware bay near Dover this June.  Fortunately for me, the green flies were not biting.  For bait, I used some bloodworms that had been left over from another recent fishing excursion to Delaware's Indian River Inlet, where my son caught a beautiful little sea trout (pictured)

In the upper Bay, I had good luck that day catching a big ugly American Eel, which I actually love to eat.  I released him, however, and continued fishing where I caught a small Striped Bass and a Spot (croaker).   I then tried a nearby brackish river that looked pretty spooky as if a bull shark 🦈 could be lurking, but caught nothing and got bit up by gnats.  The Delaware Bay and its tidal tributaries have an abundantly diverse bounty of fish, including many saltwater species.  The salt line for the Delaware bay starts somewhere up around the C&D Canal and sometimes further north near New Castle.

Freshwater:

One of the highlights of my summer will be wading out into Lake Michigan with an ultra light rod, rigged with a 1/2 ounce sinker and hook and hooking a Smelt!  I had always enjoyed eating smelt as part of Christmas Eve dinner, a tradition from my Italian grandfather, but this is the first time I caught one.  Smelt are usually caught in nets by the hundreds in Lake Michigan and it's a fishery that has been around for generations in the midwest.  They are so small swimming in Lake Michigan that its almost hard to detect when they hit.

On another day, I took my son fishing in Delaware's beautiful piedmont hill country at two sparkling creeks that also gave up a variety of fish.  Another fisherman caught a monster snakehead and later cooked it up.  This thing peaked its head up out of the water and its gnarly teeth glistened in the sunlight before diving deep under a rock.

Two of the highlights of the trip were cleaning up trash near our favorite fishing hole and finding a silver fork in the creek --that was neat.  Also we used crayfish and found nightcrawlers to catch a nice smallmouth bass and rainbow trout.  My son had a blast and it was so peaceful being in the middle of a creek on a nice summer day.  Here's a youtube short of the outing -don't forget to like and subscribe to the youtube channel!  #DelawareFishing https://youtube.com/shorts/77tmedDSFr4?feature=share

It can be really hard to break away from the rat race, but if you can, I recommend making time to get away and go fishing.  It can be both rejuvenating and rewarding.   Beneficial for your physical/mental health and a great way to spend time with your loved ones.

 May 2023

Delaware Fishing Report

Freshwater

Big bass are being caught in Mill Ponds across the first state.  Some of the larger ponds like Lums and Noxontown are giving up lunkers.  As I have said many times, Spring Largemouth fishing is all about a slow and low retrieval.  Google that for a more thorough description.  Can't go wrong with a jig or a rubber worm.

River and Bay

Channel and Blue Catfish of 20+ pounds are being caught right now on bloodworms and pepperoni in the C&D Canal.  Spring is a great time to connect with some Perch and Striped Bass in our brackish and bay area rivers.

Get out there in the bay on a sea kayak if you feel so inclined, but wear your life vest and do it at your own risk!  Though rare, Bull Sharks and a variety of Sea Snakes do occur in the Delaware Bay estuaries.

 March 6, 2023:

DELAWARE TIDAL AND NON-TIDAL FISHING REPORTS

Tidal

Things seem like they need the temperatures to warm up for fishing action, but like the watermen of Maryland and Delaware know, both Yellow and White Perch as well as Striped Bass can be caught from the docks and piers of our tidal rivers this time of year.  Nightcrawlers or shrimp tend to work well.   I have not heard any reports of Saltwater catches in the bay or the ocean as of yet other than Tautog and Sea Bass offshore.

Non-Tidal

Big panfish including Crappie and Perch are being caught in the ponds. It seems the Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and White Perch may be caught in ponds like Noxontown or Lums.  Again, a big glob of nightcrawler or Zoom lizards may do the trick.  As well, two downstate ponds have been stocked with Trout including Tidbury in Dover.  It should provide good Rainbow Trout angling all the way up until the trout streams open for fishing in April.

Until then, I'll be scouting out the Best Delaware First State Fishing Spots using my handy guide book

January 2023 - Happy New Year Delaware Fishing Community

Finding myself in the heart of winter -with fishing on my mind-I thought I'd share my Freshwater and Saltwater Delaware fishing report for January 2023.

Freshwater:  We are approaching great fishing conditions for yellow perch in the freshwater and brackish rivers and creeks of Delmarva.  In addition to yellow perch, shad, eel, bullhead catfish and even winter Largemouth are being caught in Sassafras and Appoquinimink river systems.  Another thing to remember is that good winter trout fishing can be had on White Clay Creek (and even upper Brandywine) as wild trout and holdovers do exist in these piedmont fishing locales.  A bright spinner lure or a juicy nightcrawler may be the bait of choice.

Just don't try ice fishing (very important) the ice does not ever get thick enough for this in Delaware and we have somehow not had any snow so far this winter.   If you are feeling really brave, leave behind freshwater and head down to either the Delaware or Chesapeake bays for some rockfish action.

Saltwater:

If you are seeking rockfish in the bays or saltwater, live spot always does the trick, in addition to bloodworms (or lugworms) if available.  At the Indian River Inlet, you never know what you may catch, but tautog make great eating and can be caught between the large jetty rocks using green crabs or shrimp.

September 2022 - Delaware Fishing Report

Saltwater:

Fall is in the air!  The crab boats are finishing up for the season and the winds and waves are cooling down.  This has not stopped anglers from doing very well in the Delaware saltwater arena I have been receiving steady reports of Tog in the Delaware bay, along with alot of croaker and flounder action.  Angler Mark also had a great deal of luck catching Rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay, using live spot and perch.  He even took some home and enjoyed it for dinner.

Freshwater:

With autumn in full swing, largemouth bass are hungry and fattening up for the winter.  They can be taken on a variety of lures from zoom lizards to frog poppers.  I am hearing reports of fly fishermen and pan fishermen doing very well in White Clay and Red Clay Creeks.   Of course, there are plenty of catfish, bullheads, perch and even snakeheads being caught in the brackish rivers such as Christina and lower Brandywine Rivers.

Remember gang, if you haven't already done so, it's time to download the must-have Delaware sport fishing ebook:

 FISHING UPPER DELAWARE'S FRESHWATER CREEKS

July 2022

So if you came here looking for a fishing article about targeting species in the upper Delaware river, I'm sorry to disappoint.   This article will mainly focus on some fishing I have done in the state of Delaware's upper piedmont plateau region, namely three spectacular creeks flowing from the lush hill country to become brackish tributaries of the Delaware bay.

Rainbow Trout, White Clay Creek

The first creek I explored was Pike Creek, an idyllic little trout stream near Kirkwood Highway in New Castle County.  While I didn't spot any trout on the stream, long after the opening day trout crowds have withdrawn, I had a very nice bushwacking hike through some thick forest and connected with a few nice creek chubs.  I also observed some sunfish and bass in the creek, but they weren't up to biting.

Next, I moved along to White Clay creek and fished a nice spot with fast flowing white water near a confluence.  Using a fat earthworm I had just caught in the loose, rich soil, I fished out a smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, rock bass (red eyes) and several species of sunfish.  I used a very light split shot and small panfish hook.  It was a spectacular day for creek walking, with temperatures in the high 80s and plenty of other people enjoying a dip in the cool stream near University of Delaware.  It felt great to be out fishing again after a long Covid19 pandemic.

Small Mouth Bass, White Clay Creek

Finally, I had the chance to fish with some of my children at Christina Creek near Newark, Delaware.  This stream flows down from the hills of west Newark, past the Iron Hill area eventually becoming a mighty brackish river full of Rock Fish (Striped Bass) and Catfish.  On this particular day, the creek yielded several sunfish, a creek chub and a brown trout was spotted.   An angler I know said that he caught an 18 inch trout a few days before and was preparing to cook it on the grill. That sure sounds like a nice lunch with some lemon, french fries and a pickle.  The Christina creek had plenty of twists and turns through forested parkland, behind suburban neighborhoods and college campuses.  Plenty of quiet stretches that might make an ideal spot to try some small stream dry fly fishing... if you can master the roll cast.

And lastly, if you haven't already done so, it's time to download a Must-Have Delaware sport fishing ebook:

Big Bass in the Small Wonder the very best, most comprehensive guide to all the top SECRET Delaware bass fishing spots, along with helpful techniques and hints.  Available for VERY CHEAP on Amazon Kindle Today! Complete with illustrations, photos and maps!

Delaware Sport Fishing Report May 31, 2020: #SurfFishing #TroutFishing # Delaware #Weakfish #IRInlet

Delaware Sport Fishing Report May 31, 2020

Freshwater

Fishing in the Tidal Rivers and Delaware Bay has been good for a variety of species,
including catfish, perch and carp.   In ponds and streams, Delaware fisherman can
pick among trout in White Clay Creek to Trophy Largemouth Bass in Becks Pond.
Senko worm fishing should be heating up pretty soon, but you can't go wrong with
some live shiners.  Bass fishermen looking to find some new " top secret" spots
to catch big lunkers are advised to check out the critically acclaimed unofficial guide to
Delaware Ponds and Freshwater Fishing

Big Bass in the Small Wonder https://www.amazon.com/Big-Bass-Small-Wonder-freshwater-ebook/dp/B012BZ7OW8

Saltwater

I have fished Indian River inlet during the tail end of tog season (#blackfish if
you're from #NewJersey).   Getting out on the beach, sprayed by the ocean surf
has been so healing during this current Pandemic, which came off a long winter
of not much fishing for me.  It's good to be back out there and giving you more
frequent reports.  Most recently, I fished the Indian River Inlet and caught no
fish, but alot of Ladycrabs, which are actually great tog bait and also pretty delicious,
as reported by #FirstStateFishing on #youtube.  As I understand, fishermen and
women are connecting with jumbo sized Black Drum in the Delaware bay and
some more weakfish being caught, which is a nice trend.  I can remember going
on the Tradewinds out of Bowers back in the 1990s and doing really well, filling
the cooler with Trout and Croaker.  My dad caught the biggest one on the boat
and somewhere I have a photo of the fish, with $20 bills in it's mouth!  Great
memories.

Continuing with the report, anglers fishing deeper water in Delaware Bay and
inland bays are reporting better fishing for spot, croaker and some Black Sea
Bass and Flounder. Live minnows and squid remain the best bait

If you are fishing on the ocean surf, rig two hooks above a pyramid sinker and
expect to catch a few flounder, sharks, occasional kingfish, bluefish or skate with
bloodworms... here is a nice skate from last summer

November 2019 Delaware Fishing Report -Late Fall in the first state, fishing tips, Channel Catfish, Noxontown Pond, Big Bass in the Small Wonder

November 2019 Delaware Fishing Report

Freshwater

Late fall is a great opportunity to do some
night fishing on the tidal rivers of central Delaware
again. Although the temperatures are dropping
quickly, and snow could arrive on any day, the
Channel Catfish and Perch are very active.  I used a
live bait fish to catch Catfish and got several nice
filets for the freezer.

I have also observed bullhead, eel and Shad in the
rivers but have yet to connect with a rockfish.

My tip for late fall river fishing in Delaware would be to use a split shot and
nice size 2 hook to rig a bait fish (perch, shiner otherwise) and let the fishing pole
rest propped up against the dockpiling. Within about fifteen minutes, if you do not get
a hit it's time to move on and repeat the process.  Some anglers I know are  still having
alot of luck connecting with Largemouth Bass in the millponds and "lakes" across
southern Delaware.  I will pick up some Senko worms at Walmart next time I go and
try for a late winter largemouth bass to add to the photo album.  All you anglers who are
interested in learning the best top secret First State fishing holes please check out the
critically acclaimed ebook:

Big Bass in the Small Wonder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012BZ7OW8

Saltwater

Most of the boats down the marina are wrapped up and winterized.  I will continue to
visit thedrive on beach and try for bluefish, kingfish rockfish and any skates or shark
that might bite this time of year.

My bait of choice would be blood worms or clams and the patient angler who begins
fishing before dawn may have a chance at catching a trophy rockfish.  Fly fishing can
also be an option for the adventurous saltwater angler if the wind agrees on that particular
day.  It can be fun to tie some of your own saltwater streamer flies with the custom made
Fly Tying Station from Bayside Supplies https://www.ebay.com/itm/174092434463?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Delaware Fishing Report October 2019: Fall Trout Stocking White Clay, Indian River Bay and Big Bass

Delaware Fishing Report October 2019
Fall Trout Stocking White Clay, Indian River Bay and Big Bass

Freshwater

Freshwater fishing has been good, even as the temperatures start to drop.  The largemouth bass seem to be entering a period of heavy feeding as they continue to fatten up in preparation for the doldrums of winter to arrive in the coming months.  Even as the water temperature cools, freshwater fishing should continue to be great for bass, chain pickerel, crappie and perch at most of the ponds, creeks and spillways around Delmarva.  This angler has had luck with a variety of species in the lower New Castle County region, including white perch, bullhead catfish, shad, bluegill, crappie and bass.   If you are not sure where to fish or maybe just want to try a new fishing hole, be sure to consult with the number 1 guidebook for Delaware freshwater fishing, the critically acclaimed ebook Big Bass in the Small Wonder Big Bass in the Small Wonder .  Don't forget that the state natural resources department will be stocking rainbow trout again in White Clay Creek for the fall fishing season. Smallmouth bass will continue to hit good.  Remember that if you catch a snakehead to remove it from the wild.  And, don't forget anglers, if you are into tying your own flies for fly fishing, be sure to pick up one of these nifty custom built fly tying stations available on on ebay at the following link Ebay Fishing Gear Mega Sale!!!

Saltwater

October has been unseasonably warm, even for Delaware.  As a result, the fishing continues to be pretty good on the Delaware seashore and also the back bays.  Earlier in the month, this angler had the chance to fish the Indian River Bay and had many bites, though I missed most of them, except for the occasional spot.  Even so, I know of anglers having all kinds of luck off the beaches for blue fish, rockfish and northern kingfish.  There are some still connecting with tog, seabass and flounder elsewhere in the saltwater areas.  Whatever species you are targeting, be sure to practice safe boating and wear your life jacket.  Make sure that all your boat's mechanical components are in good condition and, as always, keep an eye to the sky.  The weather and the waves can get pretty dicey as we get ready to roll in to November and December, however good fishing can still be had under the right conditions.  Be safe out there and, until next time... tight lines!

August and September 2019 - Indian River Inlet, Delaware Seashore State Park, Brandywine, White Clay, Lums Pond

DELAWARE FISHING REPORT (SEPT. and AUGUST 2019)

FRESHWATER

The biggest news to share is that a new
state record Blue Catfish has been caught
out of the Nanticoke River in southern
Delmarva.  The brute was caught by Colt
Williamson of Harrington and weighed in
at a whopping 47 lbs!

As for me, not state records but I have fished
White Clay during the late summer months twice.

On the first occasion,
I caught a small mouth bass and the second
time I caught a largemouth bass.  The creek
was observed to be very low, as was the
Brandywine when I fished it in early
September.  Seeing many bass, but only
catching two Pumpkinseed.  My favorite
bait to use is live crayfish, however I also
like to tie my own flies and take
them, along with my fly rod, to some of
the more remote ponds and ditches in my home state.

For the full list of off the beaten path ponds be sure to download this great
ebook Big Bass in the Small Wonder today!

Meanwhile, pond anglers are reporting good catches of bass, bluegill, catfish,
crappie and chain pickerel in ponds such as Garrisons Lake, Lums Pond and Hockessin
Quarry Area ponds.  River fishing for catfish and perch continues to be good in the
Christina and also look toward the Eastern shore rivers.  Try bunker, worms or even
hot dog for the catfish.

SALTWATER

Meanwhile anglers have been reporting fair catches of Weakfish, Skate,
Spot, Dogfish, Shark, and Kingfish between the inlet and state parks.
Also try a minnow for flounder in Massey's ditch at dusk.

Alot of good fishing to be had at the beaches if you catch the right tide.
A nice rockfish was caught on the beach in August and this angler hopes to
go Striper fishing sometime in the Fall, when the run really gets going.

July 2019 Delaware Fishing Report: Summer Bass Tips, Surf Fishing and Rocky Mountain Colorado Brook Trout

July 2019 Delaware Fishing Report:
Summer Bass Tips, Surf Fishing & Rocky Mountain Brook Trout

Freshwater

It looks like most of the
United States has reached
the dog days
of summer.

That time when the
cicadas buzz in the trees
and millponds are covered
with a nice thick layer of algae.
One of the finest ways to spend
an evening is to go largemouth
bass fishing.

So here are some tips for doing so successfully.
First, you'll want to fish between 6PM and 8PM, right before
it gets too dark.  The temperatures have cooled down and your
chances of hooking a big bass increase tremendously.  Alternatively,
morning is also a fantastic time for catching mill pond bass.  I recommend
using Senko worms and letting it sit with slack line on the top of the
water.   Another option is to use artificial frog bait and let it hop along
on top of the pond's algae layer.  The bass will shoot up and nail the lure
as it skids along the muck.   The final tip is to use a weedless rig to keep
the end of your line clean.  Fish hate a dirty, mucky hook.   Hopefully,
you will get time to stop by a mill pond or slough as July now creeps into
August.  For more tips on how to catch big bass during the summer check
out the critically acclaimed ebook Big Bass in the Small Wonder on Amazon
Kindle at the following link  Big Bass in the Small Wonder

And don't forget, anglers are also having luck with smallmouth
bass in the Brandywine, Catfish in the Christina River, and even snakehead
reported in other Piedmont streams and ponds.

Saltwater

This time of year, I am often out in the midwest, but I always love
to return to the saltwater haunts of Delaware to fish for kingfish,
bluefish and sharks in the surf on the Delaware State Seashore.
My technique is to get out in the water, wading with the fish.  Though
some people might worry about falling victim to a shark attack, I make
sure I don't wade after dark and never carry a stringer of fish to my side.
There are campfire stories of bull sharks grabbing onto the stringers of
unsuspecting anglers and dragging them out into deeper water.  Also, bull
sharks are doubly terrifying because they can travel into freshwater and have
been landed as far up the Delaware river as Philadelphia.  But back to surf fishing,
use a pyramid sinker and make sure you get your line over the breakers.  If the
winds and waters are very rough it can be hard to connect with fish.  But if it is
a calm day and you are using light tackle, an angler can certainly leave with a
cooler of fresh ocean fish for the grill.  Not to mention, the option to go after
Blue Claw Crabs.

Summer Vacation Fishing

I was blessed to enjoy a wonderful family vacation this summer, taking my
wife and kids out to the Rocky Mountains.  We drove a 12 hour loop from
Denver down into New Mexico and back to Denver by way of Colorado Springs.
I was completely in awe of the first class trout waters I was surrounded by and
was lucky to run into some fly fishermen catching beautiful wild brook trout
from Palmer Lake, pictured above.   I hope you all are enjoying your summer
and get a chance to do some good fishing.  Tight Lines!

Delaware Sport Fishing Report June 2019- Catfish Tournament, Largemouth Bass, Piranha Becks Pond

Delaware Sport Fishing Report June 2019

Freshwater

A canoe trip I had planned down the Brandywine was cancelled due to high water.
The torrential rainstorms have put a damper on some outdoor opportunities in June. I
was planning on bringing my telescopic rod for some casual smallmouth bass fishing.
I find that crayfish and hellgrammites tend to work best for me, in addition to spinners.

No telling what you might catch this time of year. There were reports this week
of catfish biting well, be it bullheads, channel or blue catfish.   Largemouth bass
fishing has been great in Delaware's many ponds.

In bizarre news this week, several media outlets are reporting that a decent sized
Red-bellied Piranha was caught in Becks Pond by a man named James Strab.  Wasn't
that long ago that I did some float fishing there in a blow up boat and, man, it didn't
even cross my mind that there could be Piranha swimming beneath me.  Reminds me
of when there were reports of a Caiman in Trussum Pond several years back.

Check out the many other bass fishing ponds in this handy Delaware guidebook

I fished the Chesapeake Bay recently catching mainly catfish, but the tidal rivers
and bay are giving up plenty of perch.  Further down south toward Cape Henlopen,
there are reports of Seatrout, Spot, Northern Kingfish and Bluefish being caught in
the Delaware beach areas.

Not a bad way to spend a day with the family, especially if you have a Delaware
surf tag.  They can be purchased here:

Delaware Fishing Report- May 2019

Delaware Fishing Report- May 2019

Freshwater

Delaware's ponds and rivers have sprung to life with all kinds of fish biting now.
A good friend had an excellent day catching bass and crappie in Kent County and
another caught several nice rainbow trout in White Clay, where trout continue to bite.
This angler has been enjoying some night fishing for catfish at the rivers that empty
into the Delaware and Chesapeake bays.  Big globs of nightcrawlers and bloodworms
always do the trick.   Tips like this and some top secret fishing holes are found in the
critically acclaimed ebook Big Bass in the Small Wonder

Saltwater

Surf fishing has been good for bluefish, with many hauling in 5-10 lbers off the beaches
of Cape Henlopen and Delaware state seashore.   As well, in the back bays of Rehoboth
and Indian River, anglers are connecting with flounder, spot, croaker and other fishing
favorites.   More updates to come next month.

Delaware Fishing Report April 2019

Delaware Fishing Report April 2019

Freshwater

Delaware trout season is upon us.  That wonderful time of the year when the
state stocks a handful of upstate clearwater piedmont streams with hatchery
rainbow and brown trout.

I heard that the fishing was great in White Clay Creek but extremely crowded on
opening day.   One angler I know waited for the crowds to dissipate and had a whole
honey hole to himself. He sent me this picture of his catch in the creel and they really
look like good eating.

Anglers looking to catch a cooler of trout may want to try night crawlers at any
one of the spillway or overhanging tree areas of White Clay Creek.  As well,
Mill Creek, Red Clay Creek and Wilson's Run are also good locations to visit.
Remember to bring your fishing license and 2019 trout stamp.

In other freshwater news, Catfish and Bullheads have also been biting very well in the tidal rivers around Delaware and Maryland. Nighttime is my favorite time to go down to the catfish dock.

Speaking of good catfishing, I recently had a chance to travel down to central Florida and managed to catch bream in a pond over the weekend.  I spotted a large alligator and he went after my bobber aggressively before gliding across the pond.   In all of the excitement, I thought, "Man, I am glad there are no alligators to contend with when fishing in Delaware".

Fishing for another pond dweller, the Largemouth Bass, is also heating up in Delaware's ponds and ditches.  You can't go wrong with artificial worms or poppers for bait.  Anyone looking to try fishing in one of Delaware's awesome bass ponds should pick up the guidebook Big Bass in the Small Wonder on Amazon to learn about some of the best locations and tactics.

Saltwater

Surf fishing should be picking up with bluefish, rock fish, sharks and rays ahead of the good kingfish action to come.  Stay tuned for more saltwater updates including trips to Indian River Inlet, Delaware Seashore State Park and more.
